NORTH PORT, Fla. – North Port city commissioners on July 7 honored Ukrainian Independence Day by proclaiming August 24, 2016, as the “25th Anniversary of Ukrainian Independence.”
The proclamation was read by Mayor Jacqueline Moore in the presence of other commissioners and 30 members of the Ukrainian community. Prof. Vira Bodnaruk, president of the United Ukrainian American Organizations of Southwest Florida, accepted the proclamation and thanked the commissioners for this recognition.
On July 12, the Board of County Commissioners of Sarasota County presented a proclamation, read by Commissioner Christine Robinson, designating August 24, 2016, to be “Ukrainian Independence Day.” Present at the ceremony were members of the Ukrainian American community, who were attired in embroidered clothing, and Ukrainian American Veterans, who wore their summer uniforms.
Prof. Bodnaruk accepted the proclamation and thanked the commissioners for recognizing this important date in the history of the Ukrainian people, who fought aggressors over the centuries to achieve and maintain their independence.
The Ukrainian American community of North Port and vicinity will officially celebrate Ukraine’s 25th anniversary of independence on August 24 with a flag-raising ceremony at North Port City Hall, the singing of the American and Ukrainian anthems, followed by a celebratory breakfast at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Religious and Cultural Center. All arrangements are being made by the United Ukrainian American Organizations of Southwest Florida.
