BELFIELD, N.D. – On July 20-22, the vibrant Ukrainian community of western North Dakota held its 33rd annual North Dakota Ukrainian Festival in the picturesque town of Belfield. Among the hundreds of organizers and performers were proud descendants of some of the earliest Ukrainian immigrants to the United States – farmers and laborers who began settling these lush farmlands in the 1890s, just a few years after the final battles between the U.S. Cavalry and the Lakota nation.
