HAIFA, Israel – Valentyna Klymiuk, a young scholar from Ukraine, received her Ph.D. from the University of Haifa in March 2019. Her research is at the junction of biology and genetics, touching on methods of combating a disease of wheat known as “brown rust.” This research has tremendous potential for increasing wheat yields worldwide and reducing hunger in developing countries.

On February 18, the Holy See announced that Pope Francis, accepting the recommendation of the Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church (UGCC), has appointed Bishop Borys Gudziak, Ph.D., as metropolitan and archbishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadel-phia. For the previous six years Bishop Borys was eparch of the Eparchy of St. Volodymyr in Paris, serving the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic faithful in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland.

JENKINTOWN, Pa. – After more than three years of ambitious transformation at Manor College, its board renewed President Jonathan Peri’s contract nearly a year early. When Dr. Peri arrived at Manor in late 2015, the college was facing financial challenges. Within seven months he led the college to a balanced budget, erased deficits, created significant excess revenues and restructured debt by fiscal year end. By fall 2017, and for the first time in about 10 years, both enrollment and revenues increased.

STAMFORD, Conn. – Lubow Wolynetz, curator and archival librarian at the Ukrainian Museum and Library of Stamford, Conn., received the Order of Princess Olha, third degree, for her “contributions to preserving and encouraging interest in Ukrainian culture and folk arts in the United States.” She was presented with the award by Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko in a ceremony at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York City on September 25.
