PARSIPPANY, N.J. – The Ukrainian National Association’s Home Office has mailed a voting package to all delegates to the last UNA Convention, held in May 2018, and to current members of the UNA General Assembly.
The package contains proposed changes to the UNA By-Laws and a ballot that is to be returned via the mail by January 21. Delegates and General Assembly members are being asked to vote on proposed changes to the UNA By-Laws, a draft of which was presented to delegates at the UNA’s 2018 Convention.
The voting takes place as the UNA celebrates the 125th anniversary of its founding. As noted in a letter from UNA President/CEO Stefan Kaczaraj that was sent with the ballots, “The passage of these By-Laws is an important and crucial step to ensure the UNA’s viability for the next 125 years.”

As noted in the Jubilee Book, UNA Branch 23 was active in supporting Ukrainian causes in the U.S. (churches, schools, aid to orphans, various groups) and in “the old country.” The funds for this activity came from the profits of events and from dues. The branch worked closely with the central leadership and local branch of the Organization for the Rebirth of Ukraine.

The Ukrainian National Association was present on June 19, 1980, at a meeting of Republican presidential hopeful Ronald Reagan with representatives of 17 ethnic fraternal organizations. Held at the luxurious Halloran House in midtown Manhattan, the reception was sponsored by the National Republican Heritage Groups Council. Gov. Reagan was greeted at the rostrum by master of ceremonies John Flis, UNA supreme president, and Mary Dushnyck, UNA supreme vice presidentess, a well-known Republican activist who acted as official hostess. Before any formal introductions were made, Mr. Reagan was given a traditional Ukrainian greeting with bread, honey and salt by students from the New York School of Bandura. Of all the ethnic groups represented at the reception, the Ukrainian contingent was the largest and the most visible. Besides Mr. Flis and Mrs. Dushnyck of the UNA, noted Ukrainian community leaders in attendance included Ivan Bazarko, UCCA administrative director, the Rev. Ivan Stevensky, spiritual leader of the League of Ukrainian Catholics, Walter Dushnyck, editor of The Ukrainian Quarterly, Roksolana Stojko, president of SUSTA, and representatives from the Providence Association of Ukrainian Catholics and other organizations. Also present were editorial staff members of Svoboda and The Ukrainian Weekly.

Seen in the photo above are participants of the Soyuzivka Workers’ Reunion over the weekend of November 17-19, 1989. It was the first such reunion of employees of what was then the Ukrainian National Association’s heritage center in Kerhonkson, N.Y. (With the beginning of 2015, the Ukrainian National Foundation Inc. (UNF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization became the owner of Soyuzivka Heritage Center.) Writing in The Ukrainian Weekly, Andrew Oprysko noted that the reunion brought together Ukrainians of all ages for a celebration of their cherished past. “For years, the opportunity to work a summer or two at Soyuzivka has proven to be a rewarding experience to a good many people. Each year, bonds are formed and friendships flourish, it has become a place of memories: of youthful exuberance, and the ability to share it with others in a place of unthinkable beauty.
